Why Is Reviewing Construction Drawings Before Building So Important?

John Staples | 08 July, 2026

Construction drawings guide every stage of a project, making accuracy essential. Even small inconsistencies can lead to expensive modifications, scheduling problems, and installation errors. Careful review before construction begins helps identify potential issues before they become costly field changes. What items should always be checked before approving project drawings?

One project I was involved with looked completely ready on paper, but once construction started several conflicts between the drawings became obvious. Those issues quickly led to additional work, schedule changes, and unexpected expenses that could have been avoided with better planning. After reading https://www.fields-builds.com/blog/constructability-review-best-practices, it reinforced how valuable an early constructability review can be. Catching potential problems before crews arrive on site is always less expensive than solving them during construction.

The more I read, the more it seems like the stage before construction even starts, when you're putting together the estimate, prepping the blueprints and all that, is just as important, maybe even more.

Of course, because that determines the budget, the scope of work, and the timeline. It was easier for me, since my whole build was based on ready made designs, and overall we barely deviated from the estimate. I had a steel structure workshop built, and it was a turnkey design from the company. If anyone's interested and wants to learn more, check out the full guide. It's mostly about insulating the space, but apparently that's the question that comes up most when it's about steel structures.
