AHMEDABAD: Ashok Jadeja, who is accused in a multi-crore ponzi scam, has been shortlisted by the state jail authorities along with 31 undertrials for release from jail following the Apex court order which says that undertrials who have spent half of the maximum sentence entailed by the crime should be released on conditional bail.
In September 2014, The Apex court in an attempt to resolve the issue of over crowded jails had ordered the release of under trials on bail who have spent half of their prescribed sentence in jails. Jail sources said Ashok Jadeja who was arrested in 2009 by Ahmedabad Rural police was sent to judicial custody in June 2009. "The maximum sentence prescribed under section 420 of IPC is ten years and Jadeja has already spent more than 5 years in Jail. However, we have just shortlisted Jadeja's name along with 31 other under trials lodged in 26 jails across the state and sent it to the state home department. The review committee consisting of judges will examine the case papers of each case and then give a final nod on their release on bail," said jail officials.
