Gang of six arrested for murder of surveyor

Four days after the charred remains of Kuvalai Chezhian, surveyor of Hosur Municipality in Krishnagiri district, was found in his gutted car at Thevattipatti, a special team arrested six persons on charges of abducting, murdering and helping in disappearance of evidence. A search is on for two of the main accused in the case.

On May 28, Kuvalai Chezhian’s charred body was found in a car at Ramamoorthy Nagar in Thevattipatti police station limits in the district.

Villagers nabbed V. Sakthivel (36) of Vellalapatti near Karuppur while he tried to flee from the spot. Since he had suffered burns, he was admitted to Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital.

According to a press release from the Salem District Police, inquiries with Sakthivel revealed that he was working with Ikramulla of Salem in his multi-level marketing business for the past three years and was also his car driver on many occasions. Ikramulla was said to be in a relationship with Karthikeyani of Hosur, with whom Kuvalai Chezhian also allegedly had a relationship.

Karthikeyani told Ikramulla that Kuvalai Chezhian was sexually harassing her and that was said to have angered Ikramulla.

Ikramulla hired a mercenary, Kalaivanan of Kotta Goundampatti in Omalur, to murder him. The duo along with D. Chinnavar (21), M. Murugan (23), M. Prabhu (26), R. Chitturaj (21), K. Muthu (26), all from Kitchipalayam in the city and A. Raja (30) of Kamalapuram monitored the movements of the surveyor.

On May 27, when the surveyor was moving towards Hosur in his car, the gang intercepted the vehicle, abducted him, and moved in the same vehicle in Hosur Town, Palacode, Dharmapuri and reached Harur. The gang brought nylon rope, 10 litres of petrol and reached Vaniyambadi. The gang initially demanded Rs. 1 crore from Chezhian’s wife, who said that she would pay Rs. 50 lakh. Later, she informed the gang that Rs. 25 lakh was ready with her.

Ikramulla later realised that the police was informed and decided to murder the surveyor. They beat him, slit his throat and chopped his legs. They parked the car in a pit and poured petrol and set it on fire. While doing so, Sakthivel suffered burns and could not escape while others fled.

The six arrested were produced in the court and lodged at Salem Central Prison while search is on for Ikramulla and Kalaivanan.
