After the recent fuss about Maggi noodles , attention has been drawn by FSSAI to other popular brand products that have been rejected on various grounds.
As per the assessment results in April various products have been rejected by the Product Approval & Screening Committee and the Scientific Panel. Here are some of the products and the reasons for their rejection on the grounds of impermissible ingredients.
Nestle's Maggi noodles: India’s 2-minute noodles have been banned in India, amid controversy over them containing non-permissible levels of lead and MSG (Monosodium-glutamate). The incident is a major setback to Nestle, which is now trying hard to defend its brand image
Hindustan Unilever's Knorr has been recalled from the market. The product was apparently being sold in the Indian market without required approval from Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. According to a report in The Telegraph citing state food safety officials, these brands include Ching's Secret, Top Ramen and other companies.
Global coffee chain Starbucks, which operates its cafes in India in partnership with Tatas, has been blacklisted by Central food safety regulator FSSAI after risk assessment. FSSAI had rejected applications submitted by Tata Starbucks for a total of 32 products in April. These rejected products include coffee frappucino, vanilla syrup, hazelnut flavored syrups, panna cotta pudding, etc.
AATCO Food's real mayonnaise, French dressing, Italian dressing with Oil, Italian dressing fat free and salad dressing. Around 500 products have failed to get approvals, many of which were found to contain high levels heavy metals, caffeine and iron fillings.
Kellog's Special K Red Berries cereal is also on FSSAI blacklist. Many companies in the rejected list by FSSAI were selling their products despite pending approvals.
Ready-to-eat chicken items from Venky’s, that has been rejected by the food regulator include chicken Arabic style kofta and crispy chicken burger patty. Many ready-to-eat products have high quantities of salt or heavy metals.
Beltek Canadian Water's flavored drinks has been rejected by the FSSAI on the assessment of risk and safety of the product by the Product Approval & Screening Committee. Many popular energy drinks had high levels of caffeine content and some had ginseng
Amway India's Nutrilite kids drink mixed fruit flavor was rejected by the FSSAI. The application of the product was received by the FSSAI for Product approval, but the proposals have been rejected on assessment risk of the products.
Kid's favourite McCain's 'Battered Pepper and Cheese Bites', has been rejected by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.
