6,000 Runners Join in Bekasi Nutrilite Event

Jakarta. Some 6,000 people turned out in Bekasi, on the eastern outskirts of Jakarta, on Sunday for a series of runs aimed at raising awareness and funds to combat childhood malnutrition.

Participants in the Nutrilite Health Run 2015 had the chance to take part in a 3K fun run or compete for a cash prize in the 5K or the 8-mile (12.9 kilometer) events.

At the finish lines, participants were also encouraged to leave their handprints on a giant banner, with Amway, the organizer of the event and parent company of the Nutrilite brand of dietary supplements, donating $1 for every handprint to charity.

The run, which took place at the Summarecon Bekasi township, went under the theme of “Power of 5: Raise Your Hand, Fight Global Childhood Malnutrition.”

Koen Verheyen, the president director of Amway Indonesia, said the company hoped to work closely with the government to set up a pilot project to fight infant malnutrition.

“We haven’t finalized the form, but we want to partner with the government, in this case the Health Ministry. We also want to collaborate with universities, so they can monitor the program from scientific side,” Verheyen said.

“We want to organize a pilot project for 100 children with malnutrition. We will monitor their health condition after they’re given food supplements with our partnership with universities. We’ve had early discussions with the government and they gave a positive response. But we haven’t reached the implementation stage yet.”

Amway has already set up such projects in seven other countries and hopes to expand to 15 countries this year.
