Online labor marketplaces that allow consumers and businesses to contract with freelance labor services are growing quickly, and represent an exciting new growth area for e-commerce over the next five years.
Why labor marketplaces are growing
The number of freelancers is exploding in the US and around the world, and all those freelancers need to find jobs to earn a living.
Today, approximately 25% of US workers are freelance or contingent workers, and it is estimated that in 2020, a full 40% of the workforce will be freelancers. That means that in the near future, 60 million workers will need a way to connect with buyers of their labor services, and millions of businesses and consumers will need ways to find, book and pay for freelancers.
It only makes sense then that many of those buyers and sellers will meet online, that is if the marketplaces exist and are able to address the needs of both parties.
